Complete guide: how to import from China to Mexico

Everything you need to know in 6 clear stages. Documents, real costs, timelines and tips to avoid the most common mistakes.

Who is this guide for?

Whether you are considering importing products from China to Mexico for the first time or looking to improve your current operation, this guide takes you step by step through the entire process. We cover everything from initial legal requirements to final delivery at your warehouse.

Total estimated time: Between 45 and 90 days from preparation to delivery, depending on the product, volume and transport type.

Preparation

Preparation is the most important stage and the one most novice importers skip. Good preparation prevents 80% of the problems that arise later.

The first step is to have an active RFC (tax ID) and register in the SAT Importer Registry (Padron de Importadores). The process is free and done online with your electronic signature (e.firma). If your product belongs to a specific sector (textiles, footwear, steel, chemicals, etc.), you will also need the Specific Sectors Importer Registry.

Before contacting suppliers, research the regulations that apply to your product. Many products must comply with Mexican Official Standards (NOMs). Food, cosmetic, medical or chemical products may require COFEPRIS permits.

Finally, define your initial budget. Not just the product cost — include freight, insurance, taxes, customs broker, domestic transport and management fees. On our import costs page we detail each category.

Required documents

Costs at this stage

Activation deposit — the initial payment to start working on your project. Covers personalized advisory, market research, regulatory analysis and initial supplier search.

Estimated time: 1 to 4 weeks, depending on whether you already have your importer registry and the clarity of your project.

Common mistakes

Sourcing

Finding the right supplier is the difference between a successful import and a headache. It is not just about finding the lowest price — it is about finding a reliable factory that can maintain quality at the volume you need.

The main platforms are Alibaba, Made-in-China and 1688. However, platforms are just the starting point. On-site verification — factory visits, production line inspection, certification review — is what separates a good supplier from a risky one.

Always request samples before confirming an order. Evaluate material quality, finishes, functionality and packaging.

Standard payment terms are 30% deposit + 70% before shipment via bank transfer (T/T). For large orders (>$50,000 USD), letters of credit (L/C) offer greater protection.

Costs at this stage

IMXTODO operations management — our fee for supplier search, verification and negotiation. Includes factory visits, sample evaluation and direct communication in Mandarin.

Estimated time: 2 to 4 weeks. Includes search, initial contact, quote requests, sample evaluation and final negotiation.

Common mistakes

Production

Once the order is confirmed and the deposit paid, the factory begins production. This is where quality control makes the difference.

We perform three levels of inspection:

Packaging and shipping marks are critical. Poor packaging can damage goods during 30+ days of sea transit. Shipping marks must match shipping documents to avoid customs issues.

Costs at this stage

Deposit + final payment to supplier — typically 30% on confirmation and 70% before shipment, once the final inspection is approved.

Estimated time: 15 to 45 days of production, depending on the product and quantity.

International shipping

Once the final inspection is approved and balance paid, goods are ready for shipment.

Sea vs. air freight

Sea freight is the most economical option for large volumes. Standard containers are 20ft (~33 CBM), 40ft (~67 CBM), 40HQ (~76 CBM). For less-than-container loads, LCL consolidation is available but takes longer.

Air freight is faster (5-7 days) but 5-8x more expensive than sea. Used for urgent samples, high-value goods or time-critical shipments.

Common Incoterms

Shipping documents

Estimated time: Sea: 25 to 35 days (Shanghai/Ningbo to Manzanillo/Lazaro Cardenas). Air: 5 to 7 days.

Customs

Customs clearance is the step that concerns importers most, but with correct documentation and a good customs broker, it is a predictable process. In Mexico, all customs clearance requires a certified customs broker.

The first step is tariff classification — assigning the correct 8-digit tariff code to your product. This code determines the IGI rate and applicable regulations. An incorrect classification can result in fines of up to 100% of the goods value.

The main import taxes are:

Required documents

Estimated time: 3 to 7 business days from port arrival to goods release. May extend if customs inspection occurs or documentation is missing.

Final delivery

Once goods are released from customs, the last step is domestic transport from the port to your warehouse or distribution point.

Main entry ports for China imports are Manzanillo, Colima and Lazaro Cardenas, Michoacan (Pacific coast). Ground transport times:

Upon receiving the goods, perform a quantity and quality check at destination. Compare against the packing list, inspect packaging condition and document any damage for possible insurance claims.

Estimated time: 1 to 5 days from customs release to warehouse delivery.
