Detailed cost breakdown

IGI — General Import Tax

The IGI is the tariff the Mexican government charges on foreign goods. The rate depends exclusively on your product's tariff code — an 8-digit code that classifies each product per the Harmonized System. Rates for China imports range from 0% to 35%.

Formula: IGI = Customs Value × IGI Rate
Example: $10,000 USD × 15% = $1,500 USD

DTA — Customs Processing Fee

The DTA is a fee paid per customs operation. The general rate is 0.8% of customs value. China does not have an FTA with Mexico, so the general rate applies.

Formula: DTA = Customs Value × 0.008
Example: $10,800 USD × 0.8% = $86.40 USD

Import VAT

Import VAT in Mexico is 16%, calculated on the taxable base including customs value plus other taxes. This VAT is creditable for companies with RFC — you recover it by offsetting it against VAT collected on your sales.

Formula: VAT = (Customs Value + IGI + DTA) × 0.16
Example: ($10,800 + $1,500 + $86.40) × 16% = $1,981.82 USD

International freight

Sea freight — reference ranges

  • 20ft container (FCL): $1,500 – $3,000 USD
  • 40ft/40HQ container (FCL): $2,500 – $5,000 USD
  • Consolidated cargo (LCL): $80 – $150 USD per CBM

Air freight

Typically $4 – $8 USD per kg from China to Mexico. Faster (5-7 days) but 5-8x more expensive than sea freight.

Customs broker

In Mexico, every import requires a certified customs broker. Typical fees include:

  • Fixed fee per customs entry: $3,000 – $8,000 MXN
  • Percentage of value: 0.3% – 0.5% of goods value
  • Ancillary charges: Pre-validation, storage, prior inspection

Total customs clearance cost (fees + handling) typically ranges from $500 to $1,500 USD.

Domestic transport

Ground freight from the port to your warehouse. Reference costs for full container:

  • Manzanillo to Mexico City: $1,200 – $2,000 USD
  • Manzanillo to Guadalajara: $600 – $1,000 USD
  • Lazaro Cardenas to Mexico City: $1,000 – $1,800 USD
  • Manzanillo to Monterrey: $1,800 – $2,800 USD

Worked example: $10,000 USD FOB

Suppose you import $10,000 USD of goods with 15% IGI, via sea freight to Manzanillo, final destination Mexico City.

FOB goods value$10,000.00

The categories are always the same — what changes is the amount based on your product and volume. That is why knowing your tariff code before quoting is essential.
